Our club became operational in October 1998. We felt that there was a great need for a disabled supporters club at Stockport County and that we could reach people that others may not. Sport, whether participating or as a spectator, is brilliant for stress relief and we hope to help those who are in isolation. We are a family orientated supporters club and feel that partners, care workers and friends are equally important and that they to would benefit. We are financially independent but do liase with the football club.
Our social club night is held at the Firstec restaurant at County. It is informal and most come to chat (talk football.) We have quizzes race nights raffles and put on a free supper for all supporters. Often football players will drop in and mingle for a chat too or play on the play station etc. The supporters do not want a more formal fans forum.
We have an increasing number of members at home matches, filling the wheelchair areas and expanding on all sides. At each match we walk the stands and anyone who needs to talk can do so. Often they will chat here, where they will not ring to discuss problems and we always follow these up. We also recognise if members are away and check to see if they are all right.
We would love to bring more house bound supporters to matches. Listening to the excellent commentary on Imagine Radio is fine but a visit to a live match seems impossible to many. We are striving to set up a pick-up service for these supporters and would love to hear from any supporter who would be interested in this. We have an operational 'buddy' system for those supporters who are blind or just need a friend nearby. Transport needs to financially viable as most are on disability benefits and public transport such as taxis are too expensive. Our aim is to bring more disabled supporters to Edgeley Park.
Our 'away' travel has taken off and we have been as far afield as Preston and Blackburn in our own bus We have also had memorable trips to local clubs such as Bury and Barnsley where we have built up a good active relationship. We would join up more often if we could. Away trips are very special and have only been a dream for most disabled supporters. To some it is their first away match in 70 years of supporting SCFC!
Transport was our biggest nightmare. Disabled transport with tail lifts, when available, is very expensive. Our own bus was acquired in October thanks to a donation of a Ford transit from a local charity but insurance is so high, fundraising to keep the bus operational must continue at a pace. Our funding is mainly reliant on small donations and health grants.
Our club has taken off in a way that none of us could have imagined. They are proud and have a sense of identity as well as having a 'voice' to help raise disability awareness. They use the helpline for their football problems and much, much more. Usually if we cannot help we do know of others who can and are being recognised by multi-agencies. All members, libraries, health centres, care units etc. receive our free magazine "Pitchside", which has news, views, quizzes and articles written by members.
Why not come along to our club night or match and see us in action? Stockport County Disabled Supporters Club wear their Scarves with pride.
Chris Williams: General Secretary

It was an honour to be asked to be Honorary Chairperson, especially considering my background as a chartered physiotherapist. When I look at both the football club and the disabled club, both have taken big steps in all directions over such short periods of time. All these changes are necessary if the clubs are to succeed and it's an exciting time for all those involved and long may it continue
